FY14 Assistance to Firefighter Grants (AFG) Announced

The funding opportunity announcement for FY14 Assistance to Firefighter Grants (AFG) released on October 30. The electronic application portal opened on Monday, November 3, 2014. All applications must be submitted no later than December 5, 2014.  Grant awards range up to $3.4 million with a non-federal match of 5% – 15%.

AFG is a suite of competitive discretionary grants comprised of three interconnected component programs—Operations and Safety, Vehicle Acquisition, and Joint/Regional— for awarding direct financial assistance to fire departments, nonaffiliated EMS organizations, and State Fire Training Academies.  Specific activities funded include professional training, wellness and fitness programs, equipment, personal protective equipment, modifications to facilities for first responder safety, other equipment and supplies that support firefighting and EMS operations and safety, firefighting vehicles, and emergency vehicles.

Examples of tangible outcomes from the FY 2014 AFG Programs’ allowable costs include building, sustaining, and delivering the following core capabilities:

  • Public Information and Warning
  • Operational Coordination
  • Community Resilience
  • Long-Term Vulnerability Reduction
  • Environmental Response/Health and Safety
  • Infrastructure Systems
  • Mass Search and Rescue Operations

There are three types of grants offered through this program.  Applicants may file multiple applications, but only one for each of the following grant categories.
