Internet Tax Issues

Internet Tax Issues

November 2014, Washington, D.C.

Ron and Bill continued to closely monitor the Marketplace Fairness Act, which would allow states to collect sales taxes on cross-state sales over the internet. We have been in touch with the House and Senate committees of jurisdiction for this issue and have been told that the issue is likely dead for 2014. Marketplace Fairness Act proponents had hoped the Senate would consider it together with an extension of the Internet Tax Freedom Act, which bars state and local taxes on internet access, but House Speaker Boehner is not expected to drop his objections to the bill going forward (Ohio is a “grandfathered” state that is allowed to tax internet access, which is collected at the state level). Debate on these issues is expected to carry over into 2015 and we will watch closely and weigh in on the City’s behalf as needed.
